Wages and salaries up 3.5 per cent

The monthly earnings for full-time employees in construction were NOK 27 000 on the average at 1 October 2004. This was an increase of NOK 900 or 3.5 per cent from 2003.

Employees in Building of complete constructions, or parts thereof, and civil engineering had monthly earnings of NOK 27 100 on the average. This was a NOK 1 000 or 3.9 per cent increase.

In Building installation the 1 October average was NOK 27 400, while in Building completion it was NOK 24 900. The corresponding percentage increases were 2.6 and 3.1 per cent.

Craft workers

Full-time working craftsmen increased their wages by 3.7 per cent on the average. Out of these, carpenters employed in Building of complete constructions, or parts thereof, and civil engineering got 4.1 per cent more than the same time 2003, whereas road- and construction workers received 4.8 per cent more on the average. Electricians and plumbers in Building completion experienced relatively lower increases, with 1.0 and 1.8 per cent respectively. Painters working full-time in the same group received 5.0 per cent more from 1 October 2003 to 1 October 2004.

Increases in overtime payments

The monthly average in overtime payments for all employees at 1 October 2003 was NOK 700. In 2004 it was NOK 1 000. Craft workers increased their overtime payments slightly more, from NOK 700 to NOK 1 100.

Annual earnings increased by 2.7 per cent

The estimated annual earnings are estimated using information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index. The quarterly wage index is used to distribute the increase in wages throughout the year.

The average annual earnings for full-time workers in construction are estimated to NOK 320 100 for 2004. This was an increase of NOK 8 500 or 2.7 per cent from 2003.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 48 708 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter of 2004 the statistics cover approximately 116 200 employed wage earners in construction.
