Annual earnings increased by 5.3 per cent

The estimated average annual earnings for full-time employees in construction were NOK 302 300 in 2002. This was an increase of NOK 15 300 or 5.3 per cent from the year before.

Full-time employees in building installation had the highest level of annual earnings with an average of NOK 307 800, up 5.0 per cent from 2001. This group covers installation of wiring and fittings, insulation and plumbing. Approximately 66 per cent of all full-time employees in construction are working in site preparation or activities relating to building of complete constructions. The average annual earnings in this group were NOK 303 300 in 2002, up NOK 15 900 or 5.5 per cent from the previous year. Employees in building completion and renting of construction or demolition equipment with operator had NOK 279 000 in annual earnings, NOK 12 500 or 4.7 per cent more than in 2001.

The estimated annual earnings are estimated by information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index. The quarterly wage index is used to distribute the increase in wages through the year. The annual earnings measure the average earnings for a calendar year. Annual earnings do not include payment for overtime work. The estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established.

Monthly earnings increased by 6.0 per cent

Full-time employees in construction had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 700, up NOK 1 450 or 6.0 per cent from the previous year. In construction most of the employees are males, with monthly earnings of NOK 25 800 or NOK 1500 more than in 2001. In comparison full-time female employees had monthly earnings of NOK 24 200 or 1 100 more than the previous year. Most part of the female full-time employees are clerks.

5.4 per cent increase for craft workers

The average monthly earnings of full-time employees in craft increased by NOK 1 300, from NOK 23 100 in 2001 to NOK 24 400 in 2002. The predominant occupations among craft workers are joiners and carpenters, who had NOK 23 500 in average monthly earnings per October 2002, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.6 per cent from the previous year. Electricians, electrical and electronic equipment mechanics working full-time had NOK 25 800 in monthly earnings, an increase of 4.9 per cent from October 2001.

Plumbers had an increase in average monthly earnings of 7.1 per cent, from NOK 23 400 in 2001 to NOK 25 100 in 2002. In comparison painters and related workers, building structure cleaners and varnishers had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 000, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.4 per cent from the previous year.

Other occupational groups

The average monthly earnings of managers and officials and professionals increased by NOK 1 600, an increase of 4.4 and 5.5 per cent, respectively, from 2001. In comparison clerks, service workers and market sales workers had an increase in monthly earnings of 4.4 per cent or NOK 1 000 from October 2001.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 40 269 full-time and 2 142 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter of 2002 the statistics cover approximately 115 400 employed wage earners in construction.
