Wholesale and retail trade, structural statistics, 2003, preliminary figures

The enterprises within this industry had a total turnover of NOK 891 billion, an increase of NOK 13.3 billion, or 1.5 per cent from 2002 to 2003. Employment in the industry increased by 2.3 per cent to almost 350 000 people.

Growth for retail trade, motor vehicles and petrol

The enterprises in retail trade, repair of personal and household goods saw turnover grow by NOK 10.3 billion, or 4.2 per cent, from 2002 to 2003. Total turnover came to NOK 258.3 billion. Employment was up in 2003, to 188 699 people, an increase of 2.4 per cent. In the same period, the number of enterprises fell by 1.1 per cent to 29 743.

After two years of decline, the enterprises within sale and maintenance of motor vehicles and automotive fuel had an increase in turnover of 3.1 per cent from 2002 to 2003. The turnover amounted to NOK 142.8 billion in 2003. Slightly more than 55 000 people were employed in such enterprises, while the number of enterprises was just over 9 000. Employment rose by 1.9 per cent, while the number of enterprises increased by 0.4 per cent.

NOK 490 billion in agency and wholesale trade

The enterprises in agency and wholesale trade, exclusive of motor vehicles and motorcycles had a turnover of NOK 489.8 billion in 2003. The turnover declined by 0.3 per cent from 2002 to 2003. The 18 869 enterprises in this sector employed 105 545 people.

Preliminary figures

Preliminary figures for structure statistics are only published on enterprise level. Figures for enterprises will generally have other values than figures for local kind-of-activity units. This is due to the fact that an enterprise registered with its main activity in one industry may have local kind-of-activity units in other industries.

Only figures for number of enterprises, employees and turnover are published on a 3-digit industry level. The data are not as thoroughly revised as they will be when the final figures are published in June 2005.
