Slight change in alcohol consumption

Registered turnover in Norway in 2009 was 6.68 litres of pure alcohol per person. This is a decrease of 0.07 litres or 1.0 per cent from 2008. In total, the amount of registered litres of pure alcohol in Norway increased by 127 000 or 0.5 per cent in the same period.

Turnover of spirits, wine, beer and alcopops. 1000 litres pure alcohol

The total registered turnover in 2009 was almost 26 million litres of pure alcohol. Of this, 11.5 million litres came from beer, while 8.9 and 5.1 million litres came from wine and spirits respectively. 0.5 million litres came from alcopops.

Less beer

The turnover of beer went down by 5.3 million litres or 2.0 per cent from 2008 to 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2009 the turnover of beer was at the same level as in the fourth quarter of 2008. The turnover was nearly 63 million litres in both quarters.

Constantly more wine

The registered turnover of wine rose by 2.6 million litres in 2009 compared to 2008. This is equivalent to a growth of 3.8 per cent. The turnover of alcopops went up by 385 000 litres and spirits by 53 000 litres in the same period. This is equivalent to a rise of 3.5 and 0.4 per cent respectively.

The figures are calculated based on registered imports and figures reported to the Directorate of Customs and Excise (TAD) by businesses that pay tax on alcohol sales. The figures do not include Norwegian citizens' purchase of alcohol abroad.
