More wine - less beer and spirits

The registered turnover of wine increased by more than 1 million litres in the first half of 2009. Turnover of beer and spirits decreased by almost 4 million and 23 000 litres respectively compared to the same period last year.

This is equivalent to an increase of 3.1 per cent for wine and a decrease of 3.0 per cent and 0.4 per cent for beer and spirits respectively.

The total registered turnover was 33.6 million litres of wine, 126.2 million litres of beer and 5.7 million litres of spirits during the first half of 2009.

During the 2n d quarter this year the turnover of wine and spirits rose by 6.5 and 4.0 per cent respectively, while turnover of beer decreased by 0.6 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Decrease in litres of pure alcohol

The total turnover of pure alcohol decreased by 37 000 litres in the first half of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008. This is equivalent to a decrease of 0.3 per cent. The total turnover of pure alcohol was distributed between 5.6 million litres of beer, 4.2 million litres of wine, 2.2 million litres of spirits and 248 000 litres of alcopops.

Each person above 15 years of age and over drank an average of 3.15 litres of pure alcohol during the first half of 2009. This is 0.06 litres or 1.6 per cent less than the first half of 2008.
