Increase in wine consumption

In the first three quarters of this year, the registered turnover of wine was almost 2 million litres higher than in the corresponding period last year. This is an increase of 4.4 per cent.

Turnover of spirits, wine, beer and alcopops. 1000 litres pure alcohol

In the same period, the consumption of spirits rose by 603 000 litres, or 3.4 per cent. Furthermore, the consumption of alcopops rose by 678 000 litres, or 9.8 per cent. The registered turnover of beer was at the same level as last year.

4.78 litres pure alcohol

Measured as pure alcohol, the consumption of alcohol for persons aged 15 or more was 4.78 litres in the first three quarters of 2007. This is an increase of 0.10 litres or 2.1 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2006.

Less beer

In the second and third quarter of 2007, the turnover of beer fell by 1.3 million and 3.1 million litres respectively compared with the same period in 2006. This is a decrease of 1.8 and 4.4 per cent respectively. The turnover of wine, spirits and alcopops rose in the third quarter. The turnover of wine rose by 553 000 or 3.6 per cent, spirits rose by 169 000 or 5.8 per cent, and alcopops rose by 125 000 or 4.7 per cent.

The figures are calculated based on registered imports and figures reported to the Directorate of Customs and Excise (TAD) by businesses that pay tax on alcohol sales. The figures do not include Norwegian citizens' purchase of alcohol abroad.
