Highest level of education among young people

In autumn 1999 there were nearly 742 500 persons in Norway with a tertiary education. This comprises more than 21 per cent of the population of those over 15 years of age. About the same percentage of the population have primary school as their highest level of completed education. [The figures are corrected 29.03.2001]

Most women with short higher education

We still find gender differences regarding the percentage with a long higher education. There are more men than women in nearly all age groups who have completed a higher education of more than five years. On the other hand, if we look at the percentage of those with a short higher education, i.e. four years or less, we find women with clearly the highest proportion in all age groups, except for those in the age group 60-66 years. If we look at those under 50, there are more women than men with a university- or college-education.

Highest level of education in Oslo

There is little change in the differences between counties regarding their populations level of education. Oslo still has the highest proportion of people with a higher education, but then we must take into account that Oslo has a very high number of persons with an unreported level of education and who are not included in this calculation. Akershus, too, has a very large proportion of people with higher education. At the opposite end of the scale we find Hedmark and Oppland to be the two counties with the lowest percentage of people with a college education. In Hedmark 30 per cent have primary school as their highest level of completed education, while the corresponding percentage in Oslo is more than 17.

New standard for education classification

In the Register of the Populations Level of Education for 1999, education is classified according to the revised standard Norwegian Standard for Education Classification (Norsk standard for utdanningsgruppering NUS2000). There are minor changes in both the classification of fields of education and the division of educational levels in the revised standard, hence these figures are not comparable with the figures from 1998.
