Reduced activity

Port calls made by Norwegian vessels abroad were down 16 per cent from 2008 to 2009. Arrived gross tonnage fell by 17 per cent.

The total number of port calls made by Norwegian ships at foreign ports was 55 153 in 2009 compared to 65 935 in 2008. Corresponding arrived gross tonnage went from 1 321 million tonnes in 2008 to 1 102 million tonnes in 2009.

These statistics cover vessels registered in Norway and vessels registered outside Norway but under Norwegian control. Only vessels at 1 000 gross tonnes or more are covered.

General cargo/other dry cargo vessel down

Norwegian vessels carrying general cargo made 31 669 port calls worldwide in 2009. This is down 22.5 per cent from the 40 879 port calls of 2008. Arrived gross tonnage fell by 22.3 per cent, from 499 million tonnes in 2008 to 388 million tonnes in 2009. There were 529 active Norwegian vessels in this ship category in 2008, compared with 533 in 2009.

Fewer tankers

Norwegian tankers, operating worldwide, went from 559 vessels in 2008 to 502 vessels in 2009; a reduction of 10.2 per cent. Port calls went down by 13.4 per cent, from 26 689 in 2008 to 23 118 in 2009, while arrived gross tonnage went down by 16.1 per cent, from 740 million tonnes in 2008 to 621 million tonnes in 2009.

Passenger vessels sailed as before

While most vessel types experienced a fall in port calls, passenger vessels remained stable. Port calls made by this vessel type went from 4 092 in 2008 to 4 160 in 2009; an increase of 1.7 per cent. Arrived gross tonnage went up by 2.2 per cent, from 86 million tonnes in 2008 to 88 million tonnes in 2009. The number of vessels behind the traffic was 43 in 2008 and 37 in 2009.

Traffic in Asia and Europe suffers the most

Norwegian vessels have most of their traffic in Europe and Asia. In 2009, 79.4 per cent of total port calls made abroad were in Europe and Asia. While the share of total traffic remains stable (79.0 per cent in 2008), these regions also show the largest reductions. The number of port calls in Europe went from 42 249 in 2008 to 35 844 in 2009, while arrived gross tonnage in Asia went from 364 million tonnes in 2008 to 280 million tonnes in 2009.
