Port calls up in Asia and South America

Norwegian ships over 1 000 gross registered tonnage (GRT), which includes ships in Norwegian ship registries and ships in foreign registries under Norwegian ownership, still had fewer port calls and lower arrived GRT abroad in 2007 compared to 2006. Port calls went down by 2 per cent from 68 589 in 2006 to 67 212 in 2007, while arrived GRT went down by 1 per cent from 1 292 million GRT in 2006 to 1 279 million GRT in 2007.

Increased traffic in Brazil and South Korea

South Korea had 330 more port calls in 2007 than in 2006. The corresponding increase in arrived GRT was 11 million tonnes. This is a growth of 30 and 25 per cent respectively. In South America Brazil stands out with port calls up 223 from 2006 to 2007 and a corresponding increase in arrived GRT of 11 million tonnes, making for growth rates of 19 and 27 per cent respectively.

Fewer port calls in Europe

The largest reduction in port calls by Norwegian ships can be found in Europe. Port calls went down from 46 595 in 2006 to 44 800 in 2007, a reduction of 4 per cent. Corresponding reduction in arrived GRT was 3 per cent, from 523 million GRT in 2006 to 509 million GRT in 2007. North America saw port calls and arrived GRT by Norwegian ships fall by 7 and 8 per cent, from 7 391 port calls and 245 million GRT in 2006 to 6 877 port calls and 227 million GRT in 2007.

Vessel type and classification of vessel types

Starting in 2007 Statistics Norway has implemented the use of ”Classification of type of vessel 2008” For tankers the change is insignificant while ships previously classified under dry cargo now can be found within bulk and general cargo. The remaining vessel types are classified in more detail. More on this in ” About the statistics ”.
