Increased activity for foreign-registered fleet

Vessels in foreign ship registers controlled by Norwegian enterprises had a 23 per cent increase in port calls from 2003 to 2004. This is an all time high - both measured in port calls and tonnage. The number of vessels registered in foreign ship registers has increased by 13 per cent since 2002 and 16 per cent since 2003.

Norwegian vessels1 callings at foreign ports, by continent. 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2004

Vessels in foreign ship registers controlled by Norwegian enterprises were included in the statistics for the first time in 1998.

Whereas there was an increase in port calls for vessels in foreign ship registers in 2004, vessels registered in Norway experienced a decline in port calls. Vessels registered in Norway saw a 12 per cent decline in port calls and 17 per cent decline in arrived tonnage from 2003. In total, the two groups of vessels made more than 70 000 port calls in 2004, about the same level as in 2003.

Compared with 2003, vessels registered in Norway had a 13 per cent decline in port calls in European ports in 2004. In the same period, their port calls in North America fell by 19 per cent. Vessels in foreign ship registers, however, experienced a rise in the number of port calls in all regions except South America and Australia/Oceania. The largest increase took place in Africa and North America, where the number of port calls increased by 41 and 38 per cent respectively. The employed gross tonnage in foreign ports of vessels in foreign ship registers was 887 million gross tonnes. This exceeds the total of the Norwegian registered tonnage.

855 vessels registered in Norway and 619 vessels registered in foreign ship registers over 1 000 gross tonnes were employed in 2004. Compared with 2002, the number of tankers and dry cargo vessels fell by 14 and 11 per cent respectively. The number of passenger vessels and offshore vessels rose by 19 and 22 per cent respectively. The foreign-registered fleet increased from 2002. The increase was particularly strong for tankers with 57 per cent and passenger vessels with 29 per cent.
