Increased activity by Norwegian vessels

Vessels in Norwegian ship registers or in foreign ship registers controlled by Norwegian enterprises increased their number of callings at foreign ports from 2002 to 2003. The number of such callings came to more than 69 000 last year Employed gross tonnage has increased by more than 15 per cent compared with 1998.

Vessels in Norwegian ship registers arrived foreign ports more frequently in 2003 compared with 2002. When measured in employed gross tonnage, however, the Norwegian registered vessels have a downturn of 1.5 per cent compared with 2003. The number of foreign port callings by Norwegian controlled vessels increased by 10 per cent the same period. Employed gross tonnage by Norwegian controlled vessels went up by 28 per cent compared with 2002.

The traffic to European ports increased both measured in number of arrivals and employed gross tonnage. North American port callings of vessels registered in Norwegian ship registers or controlled by Norwegian enterprises have experienced a downturn in activity over the last years, but regained to a total of more than 10 000 in 2003. Employed gross tonnage to North American ports rose by 36 per cent in 2003 compared with 2002.

Bergen is still the Norwegian port that experiences most arrivals of Norwegian controlled and Norwegian registered vessels, in total 3 198 arrivals, which is an increase from 2002 to 2003. . This is a development shared with the other large Norwegian ports, i.e. Haugesund, Oslo, Stavanger and Hammerfest.
