An increase in cargo

Compared with the 1st quarter of 2010, 1 million tonnes or 2.5 per cent more cargo was transported to and from Norwegian ports in the 1st quarter of 2011. Dry bulk had an increase of 8.2 per cent, and liquid bulk had a decrease of 2.7 per cent.

The transport of dry bulk had an increase of 1.0 million tonnes from the 1st quarter of 2010 to the 1st quarter of 2011. The transport of liquid bulk had a decrease of 0.6 million tonnes to 21.9 million tonnes. The largest ports with dry bulk were Narvik and Grenland. Bergen port had the largest volume of liquid bulk.

A total of 41.7 million tonnes of cargo were transported in the 1st quarter of 2011. Of this cargo volume, 64 per cent was sent to or from a foreign port. In the previous year, the share was 67 per cent.

More containers

A total of 170 000 TEU containers were transported in the 1st quarter of 2011. This was 13 000 containers more than the 1st quarter of 2010. The number of TEU containers with cargo was 117 000; about the same in relation to the corresponding period in 2010. The amount of containers was 1.2 million tonnes; an increase of 4.1 per cent.

Annual statistics 2010: More cargo to and from Norwegian ports

During 2010, 200 million tonnes of cargo were transported over large and smaller municipal ports. This was 17.5 million tonnes, or 9.5 per cent more than in 2009.

More passengers with the Coastal Express Liner

In the 1st quarter of 2011, 80 000 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner. This was 2 900, or 3.7 per cent more compared with the same period in 2010. January and March had an increase in number of passengers, while February showed a decrease.

Liquid bulk and dry bulk

Liquid bulk includes oil and other liquid products.

Dry bulk includes grains/cereals, coal, iron ore and other non liquid products.
