The decline persists

The number of taxi trips declined by 3 per cent relative to the same quarter a year earlier, while turnover remained nearly unaltered. Turnover per trip, on the other hand, increased from NOK 213 to NOK 220, which is 3 per cent higher than the second quarter of 2008. With respect to the previous quarter, however, turnover per trip declined by 2 per cent.

Taxi statistics. Turnover and number of trips per quarter

The taxi industry covered a distance of 165 million kilometres during the second quarter of 2009; a reduction of 4 per cent from the same quarter the preceding year. Out of this, 106 million kilometres were driven with passengers on board, which correspondingly declined by 4 per cent in the same period with respect to the same quarter a year earlier

Turnover unaltered

Despite a profound decline in the industry’s transport activity, turnover remained nearly the same as it was a year ago. This is attributable to the increase in taxi fares in the corresponding period. Number of trips, kilometres driven with a passenger, number of hours offered and occupied hours have respectively declined by 3, 4, 5 and 7 per cent from the second quarter of 2008 to the second quarter of 2009. On the other hand, taxi fares rose by 71 per cent during the same time frame.

An average taxi trip took 26 minutes in the second quarter of 2009 compared with 27 minutes in the corresponding period in 2008. Capacity utilisation, measured as a share of kilometres driven with passengers to total kilometres driven, was 64.3 per cent. Capacity utilisation measured as a share of taxi hours on offer, however, was 44.3 per cent. In other words, an average taxi was occupied for 64.3 per cent of the distance covered or 44.3 per cent of the time it was in operation.

The taxi statistics are based on a nationwide survey carried out quarterly on the taxi business classified by code 49.320, Taxi Operation in SN07. The survey covers over 90 per cent of the taxi population in the country. The data is then scaled up to population size using a factor. This factor is calculated based on data from the survey and VAT data reported to the Directorate of Taxes.
