Increased turnover for hotels and restaurants

Norwegian hotels and restaurants had a turnover of almost NOK 43 billion and employed over 81 000 people in 2005, according to preliminary figures. Compared with the final figures for 2004, this year's preliminary figures show that the turnover increased by 3.6 per cent.

This is a higher growth than the industry experienced in the previous two years where turnover increased by 0.6 per cent and 1.6 per cent in 2003 and 2004 respectively.

Increased efficiency in the hotel industry

Enterprises in the hotel industry had a turnover of NOK 15.5 billion in 2005. This is NOK 600 million more than in 2004, an increase of 4 per cent, and the numbers from the accommodations statistics show that hotels had 4,6 per cent more guest-nights in 2005 than in 2004.At the same time the number of employees in the industry decreased.

Turnover in restaurants exceeds NOK 20 billions

The restaurants increased their turnover from 2004 to 2005 by over NOK 500 million. This is an increase of 2.6 per cent. As a result, the restaurant industry exceeded NOK 20 billion in turnover for the first time ever. This industry is the largest subgroup in the hotel and restaurant industry, representing 47 per cent of total turnover and 56 per cent of total employment in the industry.

Preliminary figures

The preliminary figures for number of enterprises, turnover and employment are published while data are still being revised and may therefore deviate somewhat from final results published at a later date. While preliminary figures are published on the enterprise level only, final results are published on both the enterprise level and the local kind-of-activity unit level.
