Electricity prices up

The CPI rose 0.5 per cent from September to October 2012, mainly due to higher prices on electricity. The year-to-year growth in both the CPI and the CPI-ATE was 1.1 per cent in October.

Consumer price index. 1998 = 100

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 131.9 (1998=100) as per October 2012, compared with 130.5 in the corresponding period in 2011. This was equivalent to a year-to-year growth of 1.1 per cent in October, up 0.6 percentage points from the previous month. The year-to year growth in the CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE) was 1.1 per cent in October, unchanged from the previous month.

Monthly change - higher electricity prices

The CPI rose by 0.5 per cent from September to October 2012. The rise was characterised by an increase in prices on electricity including grid rent of 15.0 per cent, due to a sharp increase in spot prices last month. Other groups contributing to the rise were newspapers, books and stationary, together with clothing and imputed rentals for housing.

Food prices fell by 1.2 per cent from September to October and contributed to dampening the rise in the CPI. Vegetables showed the largest price fall. Fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment and airline fares fell in the same period by 2.0 and 4.7 per cent respectively.

Year-to-year growth - up 1.1 per cent

The CPI rose by 1.1 per cent from October 2011 to October 2012. The prices on operation of personal transport equipment and imputed rentals for housing were the main contributor to the rise, with price increases of 4.1 and 1.8 per cent respectively. Prices on restaurant services went up by 4.0 per cent. Airline fares rose 20.4 per cent and the prices of other financial services n.e.c. increased by 5.4 per cent. Price growth was also measured for the groups newspapers, books and stationary, along with alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

Even though electricity including grid rent showed a steep increase in prices this October, the group still had a dampening effect on the year-to-year growth, with a price fall of 6.5 per cent from October to 2011 to October 2012

Change in the year-to-year growth - sharp increase

The year-to-year growth in the CPI increased by 0.6 percentage points from September to October, mainly due to higher prices on electricity. The prices on electricity including grid rent showed, as mentioned above, a solid rise from September to October this year, while a fall of 1.7 per cent was measured in the same period last year. The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.1 per cent in October, unchanged from September.
