Tourists spent NOK 80 billion in Norway

According to preliminary figures, Norwegian and foreign tourists spent around NOK 80 billion in Norway last year. After two years of decreases, this was an increase of 5.5 per cent compared to 2003.

Foreign tourists' expenditures had a strong increase and contributed more than 50 per cent to the growth in total tourism consumption. This was mainly due to growth in catering services and passenger transport services, as well as food and beverages.

Spending by Norwegian tourists represents the largest share of total tourism consumption. In 2004, Norwegians spent almost NOK 39 billion in Norway. This is a clear increase compared to 2003. Spending on business travel also increased following two years of decreases.

Tourists purchase a wide range of services, some of which are classified as characteristic services. These are mainly accommodation-, food and beverage serving- and passenger transport services. More than half of tourist consumption is spent on these services.

Increase in tourism industries

According to preliminary figures, the tourism industries in total had volume growth in both output and value added in 2004. The driving force was passenger transport services together with entertainment and cultural services.

In relation to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the proportion of tourism industries was 3.4 per cent in 2004. This is slightly lower than previous years.
