Modest growth for tourism

The total tourism consumption in Norway in 2001 was estimated at NOK 77 billion. About 50 per cent of this was resident households tourism consumption. A significant portion of the tourism consumption was of characteristic tourism products.

Total tourism consumption was calculated at just above NOK 77 billion in 2001. Resident households tourism consumption amounted to NOK 37,2 billion, tourism consumption by non-residents 22,6 billion and resident industries' tourism consumption amounted to NOK 17,5 billion.

The annual growth rate in total tourism consumption has been modest for the period 1998 and 2001. The growth rate fluctuated between 4 and 6 per cent. From 2000 to 2001, the growth rate was at 4.5 per cent in current prices. In comparison, the consumer price index grew by 3 per cent from 2000 to 2001.

The growth rate of tourism consumption in Norway the last two years was slightly lower for non-residents than for resident households.

Tourists consume a range of goods and services. In 2001, nearly 74 per cent of the tourism consumption was of characteristic tourism products. The proportions varied somewhat between Norwegian households, non-residents and resident industries.

Output in the tourism industries

The output of characteristic tourism products was estimated at NOK 84,8 billion in 1999 and constituted a major portion of the output in the tourism industries In 2001, total output in the tourism industries was estimated at NOK 136,8 billion, measured at basic prices. For the period 1996 to 2001 the total output in the tourism industries amounted to around 5.5 per cent of total output for Norway, in current as well as constant prices.

The tourism industries' portion of Gross Domestic Product approximated 4 per cent for the period 1996-2001.

Employment

The tourism industries employed 152 900 persons in 2001, approximately 6.6 per cent of the total number of employees in Norway. This corresponds to 131 900 full-time equivalent persons, or approximately 6.7 per cent of the full-time equivalent persons in Norway.
