Stable salmon catches in rivers

The preliminary figures show a catch of 519 tonnes of salmon, sea trout and migratory char in 2001 against 525 tonnes in 2000. Both years the main river system Tana and its tributaries are missing.

The catch shows 433 tonnes of salmon and 86 tonnes of sea trout and migratory char. Compared with 2000 this is an increase of 2 per cent for salmon and a decrease of 16 per cent for the latter two.

The average weight of salmon was 3.0 kilos in 2001, against 2.8 kilos in 2000. 42 per cent of the salmons were less than 3 kilos, 38 per cent were between 3 and 7 kilos and 20 per cent were more than 7 kilos. The corresponding percentage distribution for 2000 was 48, 33 and 19 respectively.

Among the rivers included in the preliminary figures, Gaula had the biggest catch, 51 tonnes. Next were Namsen, Orkla, Numedalslågen and Tengs-, Bjerkreimselva. Tana and its tributaries are not included in the preliminary figures for 2000 and 2001, but was the most important river system in 2000, with an estimated catch of 123 tonnes. The final figures for Tana are expected to be ready in January 2001.
