Somalis dominate

A total of 171 600 persons with a refugee background were living in Norway on 1 January 2013. This made up 3.4 per cent of the total population and 29 per cent of immigrants in Norway. Somalia has now overtaken Iraq as the largest group of persons with a refugee background.

In 2012, the number of persons with a refugee background increased by 8 200. Of these, 6 000 were principal applicants, while the remainder (2 200) came as dependents. The largest increase was among persons from Somalia, Eritrea and Afghanistan, with 2 900, 1 800 and 800 respectively.

Three out of four are principal applicants

A total of 171 600 persons with a refugee background were living in Norway on 1 January 2013. Of this, 125 000 were registered as principal applicants, while the remainder (46 600) came as dependents.

Somalis became the largest group for the first time in 2012, with a total of 23 000 persons. The number of Somalis surpassed Iraqis, who have made up the largest group since 2003. The number of persons with a refugee background from Iraq remained at the same level as the previous year, 20 600.

Most youngsters, most men and most with Norwegian citizenship

The group with a refugee background was made up of a relatively high number of young adults compared with the population as a whole. At the beginning of 2013, 44 per cent of the refugee population were aged 20-39 years, while the corresponding figure for the population as a whole was 27 per cent.

Men were in the majority, accounting for 53 per cent of the refugee population.

A total of 63 per cent of the 171 600 persons with a refugee background had Norwegian citizenship on 1 January 2013.

Persons with refugee background in almost all municipalities

There were persons with a refugee background in 408 of the country’s 428 municipalities. In 29 of these municipalities, more than 1 000 persons had a refugee background. Oslo had the most residents with a refugee background with 44 100, followed by Bergen (9 100), Trondheim (5 800), Kristiansand (5 100) and Stavanger (4 700).
