Increase in payment of bonuses

In financial intermediation average monthly earnings came to NOK 38 700 per 1 September 2005. This is NOK 3 000 more than in the same month in the previous year - an increase of 8.4 per cent. A large part of this increase is due to high bonus payment. Average payment of bonuses amounted to NOK 3 100, or more than twice the amount in the corresponding month in 2004.

The increase in average monthly earnings was more moderate. Full-time employees in financial intermediation had average monthly earnings of NOK 35 200, an increase of NOK 1 300 or 3.9 per cent from the previous year.

Males and females

The difference in wages between males and females has increased even though females had a percentage larger increase in basic paid salary. In 2005 females earned 71.9 per cent of what males earned, 73.3 per cent in 2004 by comparison. This is mainly due to the fact that males had an increase in payment of bonuses of NOK 2 300, while females' monthly bonuses increased by NOK 800.

Monetary intermediation

Technicians and associate professionals in monetary intermediation had average monthly earnings of NOK 32 100, up NOK 2 100 or 7.1 per cent from the previous year. Customer consultants and executive officers represent this group. By comparison, senior officials and managers had NOK 54 100 in monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 3 500 or 7 per cent.

Annual earnings increased with 8.2 per cent

The estimated average annual earnings for all full-time employees in financial intermediation were NOK 458 600 in 2005, an increase of 8.2 per cent from the year before. Due to high bonuses in the fourth quarter 2004 the final numbers for 2004 was adjusted from NOK 421 800 to NOK 423 800.

The estimated annual earnings of employees in monetary intermediation were NOK 433 100 in 2005, a growth of 7.6 per cent. By comparison, annual earnings for employees in other financial intermediation amounted to NOK 556 500, an increase of 10 per cent from 2004.

Estimated annual earnings are based on reported wage information as of 1 September each year and include basic paid salary, variable additional allowances as well as bonuses and commissions, etc., but do not include payment for overtime work. The figures for estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established. For more information please see "About the statistics".

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 34 063 full-time employees. According to the preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the 2nd quarter of 2005, the statistics cover approximately 47 000 employees in financial intermediation.
