Many small ships registered in Singapore during 1st quarter

At the end of the first quarter this year there were 526 Norwegian-controlled ships registered in foreign registers. This is an increase of 24 ships compared to the end of 1st quarter 1995. Deadweight tonnage increased by nearly four per cent to 18.1 million dwt. Singapore saw the biggest increase in ships registered.

The 526 ships registered abroad had as of March 31, 1996 a combined tonnage of 11.8 million gross tons (GT) and 18.1 million deadweight tons (dwt). Gross tonnage increased by 87,000 tons or 0.7 per cent. Deadweight tonnage increased by 197,100 tons, or 1.1 percent, compared to the end of 1995.

Reduction in the Bahamas and Panama

The main flag states are Liberia, the Bahamas and Panama with 151, 140, and 48 ships, and 8.4 , 5.2 and 1.3 million dwt, respectively. Compared to 1st quarter 1995, Liberia showed an increase of 14 ships and 0.8 million dwt. The Bahamas, however, saw a reduction of three ships while Panama is down seven ships. In terms of deadweight tonnage, both the Bahamas and Panama are down 0.3 million dwt.
