Consumer price index at April 15, 1996:

Higher petrol and electricity prices

Statistics Norway's consumer price index rose 0.3 per cent from March to April, largely due to the cold winter weather which led to increased prices for petrol and electricity. From April last year to April this year (12-month growth), prices rose by one per cent, compared to 0.7 per cent in March. The all-items index for April was 262.2 (1979=100).

The cold winter in Europe and the United Stated pushed up demand for oil products, leading to a depletion of both oil and petrol stocks. This caused the price of a litre of petrol to rise 40 øre (6 cents) from December to April. From March to April the price increase was approximately 20 øre (3 cents) per litre, an increase of 2.8 per cent. Increased petrol prices contributed one-third of the increase in the consumer price index from March to April.
