Wage statistics. Seamen in coastal trade, 1997:

Seamen receive NOK 290 pay raise


The average pay of all coastal trade seamen paid according to the ordinary agreement in November 1997 was NOK 16,670, up NOK 290 from the year before. Total average monthly earnings amounted to NOK 20,850 in 1997, an increase of NOK 230 from November 1996.

Captains were paid an average of NOK 18,870 per month in 1997, an increase of NOK 360 from the year before. Monthly earnings of the same group amounted altogether to NOK 23,300, an increase of NOK 10. The pay of engineers was NOK 18,290, an increase of NOK 410, with monthly earnings totalling NOK 23,180, an increase of NOK 290. Comparative figures for ticket collectors show NOK 15,040 in pay and monthly earnings totalling NOK 18,810. Here, both pay and earnings increased by NOK 280.

The variations in the total monthly earnings of the different occupational groups is due to a variation in the payment of free time compensation. The compensation varies from year to year, depending on employment in the shipping companies, and when it is settled and paid.
