Tax statistics, 1996. Income and property distribution by sex:

Three in four surtax payers are men

In 1996, 860,000 persons had personal incomes high enough to qualify for surtax. This accounts for nearly one-fourth of Norway's adult population. The combined surtax, before deductions and depreciation, came to NOK 10.5 billion. Men made up 75 per cent of the surtax payers and were assessed 87 per cent of the total amount.
Over seven per cent of women aged 17 and up had no personal income in 1996, while the comparative figure for men was nearly four per cent. Among women with personal income, 43 per cent had under 100,000, 38 per cent had between NOK 100,000 and 200,000, while 19 per cent had over NOK 200,000. Among men with personal income, the distribution was 22, 30 and 49 per cent, respectively. Very few have a personal income exceeding NOK 500,000, only 1.6 per cent of the adult population. The differences here are even greater, with fully 93 per cent of this group consisting of men.

Oslo, Akershus and Rogaland are the counties that have the highest percentage of women and men with personal incomes over NOK 200,000 and the lowest percentage of incomes under NOK 100,000.

1,724,000 without net assets

In 1996, 49 per cent of the population aged 17 and up were without net assets. The comparative figure for 1991 was 62 per cent. Big changes have taken place between the sexes in the interim. In 1991, 66 per cent of the women and 57 per cent of the men had no net assets. The comparative figures for 1996 were 48 and 50 per cent, respectively. Of the group that had more than NOK 500,000 in assets in 1996, only 30 per cent were women. People with over NOK 500,000 in assets made up nearly eight per cent of the adult population.
