Survey of consumer expenditure, 1995:

Housing expenses have dropped

The percentage of household expenses that goes for housing, electricity and fuel has dropped in Norway. From being 26.4 per cent in 1989 and 1990, the proportion has now sunk to 22.1 per cent in 1995, according to figures from Statistics Norway's survey of consumer expenditure. After rising sharply up to 1988, at which point they accounted for the largest single expense for households, the trend is now the reverse.

For some time now, Norwegians have been spending a steadily declining share of their household income on food, and a greater proportion on housing. The percentage spent on food continues to fall, and is now down to 13.6 per cent. However, the survey shows that as in 1967-1987, travel and transportation are once again the largest item of expenditure for households.
