Big jump in sex crimes


In the first quarter of this year 61 percent more sex crimes were reported compared to the same quarter last year. This is the biggest quarterly jump registered for such crimes. As in the three preceding quarters there was also a big increase in drug crimes. All types of crimes went up three percent overall.

Nine hundred sex crimes were reported in the first three months of this year, up from 560 in the same period last year. This is the highest quarterly figure ever registered for such crimes.

The number of rapes reported shot up 29 percent, while cases of indecent intercourse with children under the age of 14 increased by 19 percent and incest cases jumped 46 percent. The biggest increase was seen in the distribution of pornography, with 300 cases reported in the first quarter. This is five times as many as in the same quarter last year and double as many as last year altogether. The number of rapes, cases of indecent intercourse with children under the age of 14 and incest cases totalled 107, 126 and 41, respectively.
