Record number of drug crimes


Reported narcotics offenses in Norway continued to climb in the second quarter of 1997. In six years the number of reports have more than doubled.
Reported crimes increased by 10 per cent in second quarter 1997 compared with the same period last year. The increase does not apply to all categories of crimes. While vandalism rose by 33 per cent and narcotics crimes by 24 per cent, reported violent crimes and sex offenses increased by two and three per cent, respectively. Crimes against property and traffic offenses were up nine per cent in the second quarter compared to the same period last year.

A county overview for the second quarter of this year shows a 25 per cent increase in reported crimes for Oslo and 21 per cent for Vestfold. Reports decreased 10 per cent in Nord-Trøndelag.

More use and possession

Reports for the use and possession of narcotics went up 27 per cent in the second quarter compared to the same period last year. Violations of drug trafficking subsections one and four of Section 162 of the Penal Code increased by 25 per cent compared to the second quarter last year. From 1991 to 1996 the number of reports for the use and possession of drugs increased by 143 per cent.
