Labour Force Survey, 2nd quarter 1996:

One quarter work on Saturdays

Twenty-five per cent of Norway's employees worked on Saturdays on a regular basis in the second quarter of 1996. Fifteen per cent worked on Sundays, 18 per cent in the evenings and six per cent regularly worked nights.
Inconvenient working hours are more common for self-employed people than employees, with the exception of night work. Around 60 per cent of self-employed people regularly work on Saturdays, 38 per cent on Sundays and 36 per cent in the evenings. People employed in agriculture make up half of these cases (two-thirds when it comes to Sunday work).

Employees who are required by contract to work Saturdays on a regular basis (at least two Saturdays in the course of four weeks) make up 24 per cent of female employees and 20 per cent of male employees. Sunday work is more equally divided between men and women. The same applies to regular evening and night work. With respect to those who only occasionally have to work outside ordinary daytime working hours (Monday-Friday), the survey shows that men have to work evenings and nights more often than women.
