Tipping and the Effects of Segregation

Card, Mas and Rothstein (2008) show that residential segregation can arise due to white aversion toward minority neighbors: when a neighborhood’s minority share passes a certain “tipping point,” the neighborhood experiences white flight and avoidance. We demonstrate that the dynamics of segregation between immigrants and natives in Sweden’s metropolitan areas also is characterized by this phenomenon. We then add to the neighborhood effects literature by using the tipping threshold as a source of exogenous variation in ethnic population composition to provide evidence on how neighborhood segregation affects individual outcomes. We find negative effects on the educational attainment of native children. These effects are temporary and do not carry over to the labor market. The results for immigrants are often smaller and not statistically significant .
