Photocopying in higher education, 1997:

Employees copy more than students

Employees of universities and colleges make more copies than students. But because there are far more students than employees, students nevertheless do the most copying. Students account for the highest percentage of copied copyrighted materials. This percentage is the lowest among non-scientific employees.
The average annual volume of copies per person is estimated at 2,027 standard A4 pages. Furthermore it is calculated that every person has on average copied 917 pages of copyrighted material. The number of pages of copyrighted originals per page of copy is called the protected percentage. The percentage of protected material is thus 45.3 per cent. The methodological uncertainty relating to the estimated share is less than the uncertainly about the estimated volume of copies.

The survey covers copying by students and scientific and non-scientific employees at universities and colleges. The sample includes 11 institutions of higher learning. Altogether 1,904 persons took part in the survey, and 202,063 pages of copies were registered.
