Index for household final expenditures on goods, April 1998

Sharp growth in household consumption of goods

Corrected for normal seasonal variations the index for household final expenditures on goods grew 2.1 per cent from March to April. From April 1997 to April 1998 the index rose by a seasonally adjusted 5.0 per cent.
The unadjusted index for household final expenditures on goods rose by 0.6 per cent over the past 12 months. It will be impacted by the fact that Easter fell in April this year while it fell in March last year.

The index of retail sales for April, which ran in last week's Weekly Bulletin of Statistics, showed a growth in the seasonally adjusted volume index of 1.0 per cent from March to April. The somewhat more robust growth in the index for household final expenditures on goods is attributed to the consumption groups gasoline and oils, motor vehicles and electricity.

Index has been revised

As a result of the revision of the index of retail sales (see issue 24/98 of Weekly Bulletin of Statistics) the index for household final expenditures on goods has been revised. The annual growth rate for the period 1996 to1997 in the unadjusted index for household final expenditures on goods has been adjusted upwards from 3.4 to 4.2 per cent. The growth rate for the period first quarter 1997 to first quarter 1998 has been adjusted up from 2.8 to 4.7 per cent.
