Hotel statistics, August 1997:

Eight per cent increase in foreign business


Compared to August last year, Norwegian hotels saw an eight per cent increase in foreign business, with bookings increasing from 747,000 in August 1996 to 804,000 in August 1997. Norwegian business increased by three per cent, from 1.06 million to 1.09 million overnight stays. Overall business grew by five per cent.
Except for bookings by Germans and Spaniards, which increased by 33,000 and 18,000 respectively from August 1996 to August 1997, there was little change in lodging statistics for other nationalities.

Despite the increase in August, foreign business in the first eight months of 1997 was two per cent under the level for the same period in 1996. Norwegian bookings increased by three per cent, while the total number of overnight stays so far in 1997 has increased by two per cent.

Compared to the first eight months of 1996, bookings by German guests during the same period this year were down three per cent, while reservations by Spanish guests were up nearly 40 per cent.
