Decline in food sales


The volume of retail sales in non-specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating, and retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores went down respectively 0.3 and 3.8 per cent in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year.
Retail sales of other new merchandise (e.g. clothing, shoes, electrical appliances, furniture, hardware, paints and building materials) rose 8.5 per cent in the first half of the year compared to the first half of last year. Sales of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries increased by 4.2 per cent and mail order sales jumped 12.5 per cent during the same period.

The volume of retail trade went up 3.4 per cent in the first half of the year compared to the first half of 1996. The value index rose 5.8 per cent and the price index 2.3 per cent during the same period. Retail sales in this connection always exclude motor vehicles and gasoline.
