Balance of payments, April 1997:

NOK 5.7 billion surplus

Preliminary figures show a current account surplus of NOK 5.7 billion in April 1997, while the current account surplus for April 1996 was NOK 6.4 billion. For the period January to April 1997, the current external surplus was NOK 27.6 billion, while for the same period in 1996 it was NOK 25.8 billion.

The balance on goods and services in April 1997 was NOK 6.7 billion, NOK 1.4 billion less than in April 1996. The breakdown of the surplus for April 1997 is NOK 6.4 billion for goods and NOK 9.3 billion for services.

A deficit of NOK 1 billion is calculated for the interest and transfers balance in April 1997. In April 1996 the deficit in net interest and transfers was NOK 1.7 billion.

The revaluation of foreign assets and liabilities, mainly as a consequence of currency rate fluctuations, resulted in a net gain for Norway of NOK 9.1 billion in April 1997. Norway's net foreign assets increased by NOK 14.8 billion in April 1997 and were at the end of the month an estimated NOK 98.6 billion.
