Norwegian media barometer, 1996:

Fewer are listening to radio

The percentage of people who listen to radio on an average day has declined from 66 per cent in 1995 to 59 per cent in 1996. Norwegians are also spending less time listening to radio. The average Norwegian watches 117 minutes of television per day, according to the 1996 Norwegian media barometer now released by Statistics Norway.
In the survey, which measures media use, radio was the only mass medium to show a clear decline from 1995 to 1996. The average time used to listen to radio dropped from 99 to 84 minutes, with the decrease distributed throughout the day.

The percentage of television viewers on an average day was 82 per cent in 1996, and every Norwegian watched television an average of 117 minutes. These figures have remained fairly stable in recent years.

The use of VCRs, home computers, and records/cassettes/CDs has also remained stable since 1995, although the latter was higher in the past. In 1991 the average Norwegian spent 40 minutes every day listening to albums, cassettes or CDs. By 1996 this had dropped to 30 minutes.

More girls are using computers

More girls between nine and 15 play video games or use a home computer daily. In 1995 the percentage was nine per cent, while it climbed to 23 per cent in 1996. The percentage for boys in the same age group is 40 percent, the same as in 1995. On the other hand, fewer boys of this age are playing video games; use has decreased from 26 to 16 per cent. One in three in this group has a CD-ROM at home, while 66 per cent have access to a computer in the home. In the general population 43 per cent have a home computer, up from 39 per cent in 1995.
