Energy balance, 1996. Preliminary figures:

Switch from electricity to oil last year

The consumption of energy in Norway increased last year by slightly less than four per cent compared to the year before, according to preliminary figures. Electricity consumption declined by a little more than one per cent, while the consumption of heavy oil and heating oil surged as industries and consumers switched to oil in the wake of major increases in electricity prices last year.
Energy consumption last year totalled 773 petajoules (PJ), an increase of 3.6 per cent from the year before. By comparison, consumption increased by 1.2 in 1995 and 1.8 per cent in 1994. The large increase in energy consumption last year is attributed to the strong 4.8 per cent growth in the gross domestic product and parallel 4.7 per cent increase in total household consumption compared to the year before.

Energy consumption in manufacturing and mining was virtually unchanged from 1995 to 1996, while it increased by around seven per cent in other sectors such as service industries, households and primary industries. Energy consumption in transport rose by about four per cent.
