Hotels and restaurants, 1995. Statistics of Accounts:

Reduced profitability for hotel and restaurant industry in 1995

Limited companies in Norway's hotel and restaurant industry experienced an overall reduction in profitability from 1994 to 1995. The negative profit performance means that all main business groups had a diminishing return on total assets and operating margins. Most businesses also saw a decline in return on equity.
The return on total assets at the industry level sank by 1.8 percentage points from 8.6 per cent in 1994 to 6.8 per cent in 1995. Restaurant and hotel operations had the lowest reduction in return on total assets, from 8.6 per cent in 1994 to 7.3 per cent in 1995 for restaurants and from 7.5 to 6.0 per cent for hotels. The most negative performance was seen in bar operations, with the return on total assets declining 4.5 percentage points, from 11.7 per cent in 1994 to 7.2 per cent in 1995. The highest return on total assets in 1995 was achieved by canteen and catering operations and the restaurant sector, with respectively 16.5 and 7.3 per cent.

The downturn was generally more visible among small companies, although the largest players in the industry also saw their return on total assets decline. Large enterprises in this context are defined as businesses with total assets higher than NOK 10 million.
