Foreign ships carry most imports to Norway


Foreign ships transported most of the goods brought in to Norway and also carried substantially more than Norwegian-owned ships. Merchandise import statistics for January furthermore show that 13 per cent of all goods crossing Norwegian borders arrived by vehicle.

According to trade statistics, the quantity of goods coming into Norwegian customs stations totalled 2,523,000 tons in January. Of the total, 1,220,000 tons were carried by foreign ships, while 817,000 tons were transported by Norwegian ships. Road transport ranked third with 322,000 tons. A further 93,000 tons arrived by ferry and 68,000 tons by rail. Shipments carried by air, postal service and other transport modes are often high-value, low-weight items. For instance, slightly more than 2,000 tons valued at NOK 1,244 million arrived by air, while the value of merchandise trucked in was estimated at NOK 6,026 million.
