Fewer cyclists killed so far this year


Traffic accidents so far this year have claimed 188 lives in Norway. There were 217 fatalities in the corresponding period last year. Four cyclists have lost their lives so far in 1996. This is down sharply from previous years. Last year, 12 cyclists died and from 1991 to 1995 an average of 15 cyclists were killed during the first nine months of the year. All of the cyclists killed this year were over 64.

According to preliminary statistics, September traffic accidents claimed 23 lives. This is nine more persons compared to the same month last year. The number of persons killed in September last year was, however, especially low, seen in comparison to previous years. Ten of those killed in the past month were motorists, against two last year. Altogether 93 motorists have lost their lives so far in 1996. This is two more than the previous year.
