Nursing and care services, 1995:

Fewer institutions for the elderly

The number of institutions and institutional places for the elderly in Norway fell from 1994 to 1995. At the same time, the availability of home nursing care has been expanded, and more elderly people have been offered a place in service-linked housing. The number of nursing home beds has also increased.

The number of institutional places for the elderly dropped by 964 to 43,977 places from 1994 to 1995, and the number of institutions declined from 1,080 to 1,053. The availability of nursing home beds increased by 1,280 to 24,592 beds during the same period. The overall percentage of private rooms has increased from 80.2 per cent to 80.9 per cent.

Expanded home nursing care

At the end of 1995, 97 per cent of all municipalities (local governments) and urban districts offered home nursing care services every day of the week. Sixty-four per cent of all local governments and urban districts offer 24-hour home nursing care. This represents an expansion of home nursing care in comparison with 1994 when 92.5 per cent offered services every day of the week, and 59.6 per cent offered 24-hour services.
