Road traffic accidents involving personal injury, August 1996:

Fewer car passengers die in traffic accidents


Twenty-five persons were killed in August traffic accidents in Norway, up five from August last year. The number of traffic fatalities nevertheless still shows a positive trend eight months into 1996. From January to August this year 164 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents, against 203 last year. Thirty of the victims so far this year have been passengers. During the same period last year, 56 persons in this traffic group were killed.

The biggest decline in the number of fatalities among passengers was in the age groups 15-25 and 25-64 years of age, with respectively 10 and nine fatalities this year, against 21 and 23 fatalities last year. The 1991-1995 average for this traffic group is also higher compared to this year, with eight more fatalities between the ages of 15 and 24 and nine more between 25 and 64 years of age.

According to the first overview, 1,021 persons were injured in traffic accidents in August, four fewer than in the same month last year. Preliminary figures for 1996 show 7,083 injured persons. This compares to 7,245 at this same time last year.
