Reported offences, 2nd quarter 1996:

More counterfeiting

Sixty-seven cases of counterfeiting were reported in Norway in the second quarter against 11 cases in the same quarter last year. A large increase in counterfeiting was also seen in the first quarter. The number of pornography-related offences increased substantially in both the first and second quarters. At the same time, there has also been a strong increase in the most serious types of narcotics crimes.

Sex crimes increasing the most

Divided into 10 main categories of crimes, the statistics show that most groups increased in the second quarter compared to the same quarter last year. The largest increases were registered in sex crimes and drug trafficking, which rose 72 and 30 percent respectively. The increase in sex crimes is mostly attributed to violations of pornography laws, which accounted for 380 cases against 24 in the same quarter last year.

In the drug felonies group serious crimes connected with the import and sale of illicit drugs increased the most, with 260 offences reported in the second quarter. The corresponding figure for second quarter 1995 was 158. This is the fourth quarter in a row where there has been an increase of 30 to 70 percent in serious drug trafficking offences.
