Road traffic accidents involving personal injury, April 1996:

Steady decline in traffic fatalities

Sixty-six people were killed in traffic accidents in Norway in the first four months of the year. This is 32 fewer compared to the same period last year and 25 fewer than the average for 1991-1995. The number of persons killed in March and April was particularly low compared to previous years, with respectively 13 and 8 fatalities.

We have to go back to April 1965 to find a month with as few as eight fatalities. In April last year, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 23 persons. The eight fatalities in April included four drivers, two passengers and two pedestrians.

Preliminary figures show that 583 persons were injured in traffic accidents in April. The comparative number for the same month last year was 571. So far this year, 2,845 persons have been injured in traffic accidents. The comparative figure for the same period last year was 3,209.
