Reduced settlement flows

In the first quarter of 2010 the outgoing settlements from Norwegian banks ended at NOK 320 billion. For the same period, the total value of incoming settlements was NOK 313 billion.

From the 4th quarter of 2009 to the 1st quarter of 2010, the total values decreased for both the incoming and outgoing settlements between Norway and abroad. The outgoing settlements ended at slightly less than NOK 320 billion in the first quarter of 2010. This was a decrease of NOK 30.6 billion or 8.7 per cent from the previous quarter. The incoming settlements decreased by NOK 45.9 billion or 12.8 per cent, ending at somewhat more than NOK 313 billion in the first quarter of 2010.

The decline in transactions from the EU countries, excluding the Nordic region, accounted for the drop in value for the incoming settlements in the first quarter. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2009, there have been some changes in the country distribution. The incoming settlements from the non-Nordic EU countries have declined by NOK 50.6 billion or 28 per cent compared with the fourth quarter of 2009. In the opposite direction, both the Nordic countries and North and Central America showed an increase in the first quarter of 2010 for the incoming settlements by NOK 7.4 and 2.2 billion respectively.

In the first quarter of 2010, the outgoing settlements to the non-Nordic EU countries was NOK 46.1 billion or 27 per cent less than in the 4th quarter of 2009. Both the Nordic countries and North and Central America showed increased values of outgoing settlements, with NOK 11.7 and 5.7 billion respectively.
