More graduate degrees completed

In the study year 2006/07, students completed about 2 000 more studies at graduate level than in the previous year. At undergraduate level there was a slight decrease of 200 completed studies.

About 10 300 graduate degrees, studies with duration of four years or more, were completed during the study year 2006/2007. This is about 2 000 more than the year before. 34 per cent of students who completed a degree at graduate level during 2006/07, graduated within six years from first time enrolment. Master of Philosophy and Master of Science were the studies with the highest proportion of completed degrees within six years. 88 per cent of the studies for Master of Philosophy were completed within six years, while the corresponding figure for Master of Science studies was 85 per cent.

Throughput statistics are defined as the number of years since first time registration in tertiary education, and are not readjusted if a student changes to a new degree. According to this definition, very few students who switch degrees underway will be able finish within the expected timeframe. Deferment and part-time studying are not accounted for either.

Undergraduate studies are studies with a duration of four years or shorter at full time. Among these studies belong educations to be e.g. pre-school teacher, vocational teacher, engineer and nurse.

One of two undergraduate studies completed within four years

During the study year, about 23 400 undergraduate degrees were completed. 57 per cent of all undergraduate studies were completed within four years after enrolment. Most of the undergraduate studies have duration of three years. 18 800 studies with duration of three years were completed, while the number of completed four year degrees was 2300. 43 per cent of the studies with an indicated schedule of three years were completed within three years and 65 per cent where completed within four years. The studies with the fastest throughput of students were studies for pre-school teacher and engineer. For these studies, 72 and 71 per cent of the studies were completed within four years.
