Increase in international transport

One million tonnes of goods were transported to and from foreign countries on Norwegian lorries in the second quarter of 2002. This was 9.8 per cent more than in the corresponding period last year.

Norwegian lorries drove 49.1 million kilometres in connection with transport abroad in the second quarter this year. The transport performance constituted 804.2 million tonne-kilometres in this period.

During the first six months of 2002, 1.9 million tonnes of goods were transported to and from Norway, an increase of 3.8 per cent since the same period last year. The amount of goods transported from Norway increased by 5.3 per cent compared with the first six months last year. The amount of goods transported to Norway increased by 2.6 per cent.

The amount of goods transported to and from Sweden increased by 9 per cent or 55.8 million tonnes from the second quarter of 2001 to the second quarter of 2002. The shares of goods transported to and from Denmark and the Netherlands have gone down in this period, while the corresponding shares for Sweden and Germany have been stable. The share of the other countries of the EC has increased from seven to twelve per cent. Sweden still has the majority of the market with 67 per cent of the import and export on Norwegian lorries.

Transport abroad constitutes one fifth

Transport performance in connection with journeys abroad constituted 1.5 billion tonne-kilometres in the first six months of 2002. The total transport performance for all transports by Norwegian lorries, domestic and international, constituted 7.6 billion tonne-kilometres in the first six months of 2002. Transport abroad constituted 19.3 per cent of the total transport performance with Norwegian lorries.

Empty kilometres up

Norwegian lorries drove a total of 92.3 million kilometres in connection with transport abroad in the first six months this year. This was 2.3 per cent more than in the same period last year. Of the total kilometres driven, 20.2 million kilometres or 21.9 per cent were driven in Norway in connection with journeys abroad. The share of kilometres driven without cargo in connection with journeys abroad was 13.8 per cent compared with 11.6 per cent in the same period last year.
