Norwegian lorries drove 171 million kilometres in connection with journeys abroad last year, of which 23.4 million kilometres or 13.7 per cent were driven without cargo. This was an increase in the rate of empty kilometres of 1.7 per cent from 2001.

3.8 million tonnes of goods were transported on Norwegian lorries to and from abroad in 2002, 1.8 per cent more than in 2001. Norwegian lorries transported almost 1.8 million tonnes of goods from Norway in 2002, an increase of 7.2 per cent from the previous year. Almost two million tonnes of goods were transported to Norway last year, a slight decrease from 2001.

Nearly two thirds to Sweden

Last year 1.1 million tonnes of goods were transported on Norwegian lorries to Sweden. This accounted for almost 65 per cent of the total amount of goods transported abroad this year. The corresponding share in 2001 was 60 per cent. Norwegian lorries carried 164 400 tonnes of goods from Norway to Germany in 2002. Transports to Germany accounted for 9 per cent of the total amount of goods transported from Norway last year.

Decline in international journeys' share of transport performance

The international transport performance constituted 2 706 million tonne-kilometres in 2002. The total transport performance - including national transports - for lorries registered in Norway was 15.4 billion tonne-kilometres in 2002. Transports abroad accounted for 17.5 per cent of the total transport performance this year. This share has shown an even decrease in recent years.

The transport performance on journeys to and from Norway decreased by 3.6 and 1.7 per cent respectively from 2001 to 2002. Since 1999, the transport performance on journeys from Norway has decreased by 18.3 per cent, while the corresponding share for journeys to Norway has been reduced by 8.2 per cent.

Main figures for the fourth quarter 2002

Norwegian lorries carried 940 900 tonnes of goods to and from abroad during the fourth quarter 2002. This is a decrease of 2 900 tonnes from the corresponding quarter the previous year. The transport performance decreased by 11.5 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2001, and constituted 668.2 million tonne-kilometres in the same quarter last year. The rate of empty kilometres was 13.8 per cent in the fourth quarter, which is nearly two percentage points higher than in the same quarter the previous year.
