Increase in transport performance

Published:

The domestic transport performance increased by 5.9 per cent in the 3rd quarter of 2017 compared to the 3rd quarter of 2016. Accordingly there was an increase of 9.4 per cent in transport performance internationally.

The total domestic transport performance by Norwegian-registered lorries was 4.9 billion tonne kilometres in the 3rd quarter of last year, while the import and export-related transport performance was 0.6 billion.

Less goods

A total of 67.8 million tonnes was carried by Norwegian-registered lorries in the third quarter of last year. This is a decrease of 2.6 per cent in comparison with the third quarter of 2016. The average transport distance per tonne increased from the 3rd quarter of 2016 to the 3rd quarter of 2017 by 6 kilometres, from 66 to 72. This explains why transport performance increased while the volume of goods decreased. For Norwegian-registered lorries, the volume of goods increased by 3.9 per cent during this period and totalled 2.1 million tonnes.

Three in four kilometres by hire or reward transport

Out of a total transport performance domestically of 4.9 billion tonne kilometres in the 3rd quarter of 2017, hire or reward transport amounted to 76.4 per cent, which corresponds to 3.7 billion tonne kilometres. Furthermore, hire or reward transport operators carried 67 per cent of the goods and had 69 per cent of the total driven kilometres.

Every third kilometre by empty lorry

A total of 469 vehicle kilometres were driven domestically, including both empty and carrying cargo, in the 3rd quarter of 2017. This is a small increase compared to the 3rd quarter of 2016. A total of 137 million kilometres were driven without load. This amounts to 29.3 per cent, which is a slight increase compared to the 3rd quarter last year, which was 28.8 per cent. Driving without cargo internationally was less, and amounted to almost 21 per cent in the 3rd quarter last year.

Mass transport dominates

Norwegian lorries carried almost 41.3 million tonnes of gravel, sand, dirt and similar on Norwegian roads in the 3rd quarter of 2017. This is a decrease of 2.4 per cent from the 3rd quarter of 2016. Mass transport is the dominating type of goods domestically, and represented a total of 61 per cent of all loads on Norwegian lorries. Other manufactured goods, grouped goods and other goods dominate the kilometres driven because this type of cargo on average is hauled over longer distances. The total was 27 per cent in the third quarter of 2017.

New statistical methods can affect comparability

A new sample method was introduced in the 3rd quarter of 2015, and in the 1st quarter of 2016 a new questionnaire was launched and new estimation routines were adopted. The principles for managing of collection or distribution round type were also amended in accordance with international recommendations in 2016, and this change is also made for 2015. All of these changes will to some extent contribute to affecting the comparability of the quarters for individual variables, such as. Tonnes and tonne kilometres, distribution of goods and distribution between hire and transport for own account. The change in round trip treatment will affect the comparability between 2015 and earlier. Consequently, time series must be interpreted with some caution, but the changes are nevertheless greater that you can follow the main features of the development of transport performance for lorries over time. See more information about the changes in About Statistics.
