Up to and including 1908, imports and exports refer to country of consignment. . can in this table either mean that the country did not exist or that there was no trade with the country. Total imports and exports for the years 1866-1908 will not be equal to the sum of individual countries or the sum of continents. The totals have nevertheless been included so that the table appears symmetrical for all years. Figures for individual countries and continents are taken from Historical Statistics 1978 tables 167-170. Total imports and exports for the years 1866-1908 are taken from Historical Statistics 1968 table 153. Information regarding country codes, in About the statistics, definitions and heading Country codes used in the historical tables 1866-1987.

Svalbard

As from 1951 Svalbard is treated as part of Norway. Before 1905 Svalbard is uncluded under Russia.

Finland

Before 1909 exports of foreign merchandise is included with Russia.

Iceland

Including Faroe Islands before 1889.

Sweden

Prior to 1907 direct in-transit trade with Sweden is included in the figures. Prior to 1907, exports of transit goods are also included fo rexports to the various countries.

Albania

1936-1948 figures for Andorra is included under Albania. For 1931-1935 both countries are included under Other countries in Europe.

France

Including Monaco 1931-1948.

Gibraltar and Malta

1932-1935 Gibraltar and Malta are included under Other countries in Europe.

Ireland

1931 figures refer to the whole of Ireland. As from 1932 the Irish Free State only.

Yugoslavia (-2003)

Berfore 1919 Serbia. 1942-1945 Croatia and Serbia.

USSR (-1992)

Figures for 1909-1918 and 1946- include Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Spain

Included Canary Islands 1902-1931 and 1949-.

United Kingdom

1931 excluding Northern Ireland.

Czechoslovakia (-1992)

1939-1945 Bohemia-Moravia and Slovakia.

Türkiye

Import figures include: 1866-1867 Türkiye, 1868-1880 Türkiye and Greece, 1881-1888 Türkiye, Romania and Greece, 1889 and later Türkiye in Europe and Asia. Export figures refer only to Türkiye.

Germany

1938-1945 there were great variations in the territory included under Germany.

Austria

Before 1889 Austria is included under Italy, 1938-1945 under Germany.

British South Africa

Includes Bechuanaland, Swaziland, Basutoland, Mauritius, St. Helena, Ascension, Tristan da Cunha. Prior to 1960 only Bechuanaland, Swaziland and Basutoland (Lesotho).

British West Afrika

Figures for 1931-1935 include, French West Africa, French Equatorial Africa and Liberia. For 1931, Belgian Congo is also included. For 1961-1965 Gambia is included.

British East Africa

The figures for 1931-1935 also include Sudan, Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, Ethiopia and Djibouti. For 1931, Madagascar is also included. Before 1955 Malawi is included, before 1960 British Somaliland. As from 1964 only Mauritius and Seychelles.

French West Africa

Included up to 1958 Senegal, French Guinea (now Guinea), Ivory Coast, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Dahomey (now Benin), French Sudan (now Mali), Niger and Mauritania.

French Equatorial Africa

Includes Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Central African Republic, Chad. From 1949 as Equatorial Customs Union. For 1949-1958 the figures are invluded under Cameroon.

Burkina Faso

Changed name from Upper Volta in 1984.

Benin

Was called Dahomey until 1975.

Djibouti

Was called French Somaliland before 1967, then Afar and Issa Territories until 1977.

Kenya

For 1962-1963 Uganda is included.

Congo (the Democratic Republic of the)

Was called Belgian Congo before 1960 and Zaire 1966-1997. For 1949-1960 figures for Rwanda and Burundi are included.

Madagascar

For 1949-1960 figures for Reunion are included.

Malawi

Was called Nyasaland before 1963.

Morocco

1949: Tanger is included. 1949-1956: French Morocco, as from 1957 also Spanish Morocco.

Nigeria

For 1958-1966 British Cameroon is included.

Portuguese West Africa

Includes Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe.

Mozambique

Was called Portuguese East Africa before 1974.

Zimbabwe

Was called Southern Rhodeisa before 1964 and Rhodesia 1964-1980. The figures for 1931-1935 also include British South Africa and Portuguese Africa. For 1931, South Africa is also included. 1949-1954: Including Zambia. 1955-1963 including Zambia and Malawi.

Somalia

1949-1960 Italian Somaliland, later also British Somaliland.

Spanish Territories in Africa

Before 1955 including Spanish Morocco. 1967-1969 including Equatorial Guinea.

Was called Swaziland before 2018.

For 1958-1961 Kenya and Uganda are included.
