Fewer participants at services
A total of 67 000 services were conducted and more than 6.2 million participants at services were registered by the Church of Norway in 2009. Compared with the previous year, there were 550 fewer services and almost 100 000 fewer participants. On average, 93 attended each service.
Services on Sundays and holidays had the largest decrease by 940 services, and services conducted other days had an increase of almost 400. In spite of more services on ordinary days, the number of participants was lower than the year before.
Baptising and confirmation
A total of 42 000 were baptised, 41 900 were confirmed and 38 300 were buried by the Church of Norway in 2009. The proportion of baptised people to births was 68 per cent. Sixty-six per cent of all 15 year-olds were confirmed in the church. A total of 92 per cent of the deceased received a church burial. The number of church weddings was 10 000; a decrease of 500 from 2008.
More resignations
A total of 10 900 members left the Church of Norway during 2009. At year-end 2009, 79 per cent of the Norwegian population were members of the Church of Norway.
